Let’s take you on an extraordinary journey through the history of how this sacred Shree Samsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math came into existence.
1475

Shreemad Ramachandra Teerth, 11th Peethadhipati in the lineage of Shree Palimaru Matha, gave deeksha to a vatu named Madhava, a Gowda Saraswat Bhrahman, initiated Madhava into sanyasa in Srisaka 1397 Manmatha Samvatsara, Chaitra Shukla Dviteeya, and named him Shreemad Narayana Teerth, conferring all the required rights. The Rama vigraha was given to Shreemad Narayan Teerth in Badari Kshetra which lead to establishment of Shree Math, renowned as the Shree Samsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math.

1518

In the holy town of Gokarna, Shri Ramchandra Teerth, the sixth pontiff was resting in deep meditation/ sleep. That night, something extraordinary happened.

Lord Vishnu appeared in Swamiji’s dream and revealed that a special place existed behind the Gokarna Math, where the idols of the Lords were buried and needed to be retrieved. He was instructed to dig at that exact location to find them.

Description

When Swamiji woke up the next day, wasted no time. Along with the disciples started digging at the exact spot shown in the dream. The stone idols of Hanumanta, Lakshmana, Lord Ramachandra and Seeta devi were found.

Depiction of Spirituality

Swamiji decided to place the idols in the Gokarna Math. But, before he could begin, another vision was received by Swamiji. Lord Vishnu said that the temple was not meant to be built in Gokarna. Instead, the idols were to be carried towards the North, and the location where they became too heavy to lift any further would be the place for their final establishment.

Thus, the journey towards the north commenced, with devotees carrying the idols with great devotion. After miles of walking, they reached a village called Poingunin.

The Idols became very heavy and could not be carried any further. It seemed like this was the place. But Swamiji wasn’t convinced. The resources in Poingunin were insufficient.

So, once again, he turned to Lord Rama for guidance. That day, Lord Rama came as an ordinary saint and assured Swamiji that, at the brink of sunrise, worship the Kamdhenu (White Cow) and she would lead you the way.

Poingunin location

At sunrise, as foretold, the sacred cow appeared. Swamiji, recognizing the sign, worshiped the cow, and followed her as she began to walk towards the East.

After covering a few kms, at the bottom of the mountain, on the riverbank of Kushavati, something miraculous happened.

The sacred cow bowed down and began to pour milk onto the land, a sight unseen before. This was it. This was the divine confirmation. This brought immense happiness to the face of Shri Ramchandra Teerth.

Parampoojya Shreemad Ramachandra Teerth Swamiji, installed the idols of the Lord Bhratasahita Shree Seetapati Ramachandra. Since then this place has been the Kendra Math of Shree Samsthan Gokarna Partagali Jeevottama Math.

The Kushavati River itself is said to have a deep mythological connection. It is believed that Shri Bramhadev from his oblong water pot (Kamandalu) had carefully sprinkled water to construct this river so that when Lord Rama and Lakshman set out in search of Sita, they would have a place to rest. The divine forces created this river to give them shelter and water.
